Assaggi Italian Foods

Assaggi is an owner run Italian restaurant situated in Illovo and has been open for over 20 years. The restaurant is quite small and the seating outside is quite dreary. We went for Saturday lunch when it was quiet but I think the ambience would be warm, inviting and cosy over the dinner service.

The kitchen is open and it was endearing to see the way the chef/owner interacted with the staff. Everyone seemed part of a family, fooling around and joking with each other which really touched my heart.

For starters we shared the zucchini chips served with a carrettiera sauce and balsamic mayonnaise for R55. We didn’t recieve the sauce and the mayonnaise tasted like normal mayo. I did like the zucchini chips which was also a huge portion.

The home made cannelloni tubes filled with spinach and ricotta cheese is baked in the most delicious bechamel and Napolitana sauce for R95. I really loved the flavour of the sauce but the filling had a little too much spinach vs ricotta for my taste buds. I also would have loved it to have more sauce.

The French brie and asparagus lasagne with parmesan and bechamel sauce lacked seasoning. Both the starter and main portions were huge. We didn’t get close to finishing our mains because we had a starter. Their pastas are a great choice if you are in need for some comfort food.

It’s one of the better Italian restaurants with homely food in generous portions. I will definitely be going back to try the scallop starter and truffle pasta out.
