The Union Bar is a pop up bar that is currently calling Melrose Arch home till the 13 July 2013. If you weren’t familiar with the term pop up, it is merely a fancy way of saying temporary. Its a great idea to draw customers in with the lure of limited availability. Genius I tell you.
We found it a little difficult to locate the place in Melrose Arch (shop numbers are not that useful!). The bar is located opposite YDE. I really liked the decor of the place. Ofcourse as a MINI driver I am going to love a picture of a cute MINI COOPER on the wall 🙂 A place that has couches to snuggle on is always a winner for me. The bar does get super busy once the music is playing and the booze is flowing so the seating serves no purpose later on.
I was really excited to try out the unique cocktails but the one I had was disappointing and did not live up to expectation. I chose the “One night in Bombay” which contained Bombay Sapphire Gin, aperol, fresh pineapple, passion fruit and basil over lime ice cubes. The taste was average for an extravagant price of R65. It was a measly amount of cocktail and 80% of the glass was take up by the ice cubes. There are two non-alcoholic cocktails on the menu. After initial reluctance at trying a virgin cocktail named the “Justin Bieber” we gave it a go. Fresh berries, passion fruit, cinnamon, apple and lime juices tasted better than my cocktail but nothing more than expensive juice. The bar does offer a few snacks but I would recommend you eat elsewhere beforehand as it is a bar not a restaurant.
While swarms of people were interested in a new night spot with creative cocktails, The Dining Room which is the pop up restaurant running in conjunction with the bar was the one that caught my eye. They offer a 6 course menu creation by Vicky Crease priced reasonably at R350pp and an extra R250 pp for wine pairing. You can read about it in my next post.
Give The Union Bar a try for interesting albeit expensive cocktails and a trendy place to hang out for drinks with friends.
